A physical examination finding in ALI/ARDS includes cyanosis in which areas?

Fingers, toes, and lips

In severe hypoxemic respiratory failure like ALI/ARDS, cyanosis is most evident in areas where deoxygenated blood can be observed easily, especially where the skin is thin or mucous membranes are exposed. The lips and the distal fingertips (fingertips) are classic sites because they reflect low oxygen content in hemoglobin quickly. Including toes covers the peripheral digits as well. This distribution—fingers, toes, and lips—best captures both central and peripheral signs of hypoxemia.

The alternatives don’t fit the typical pattern: cyanosis confined to the face isn’t as reliable a marker on its own, cyanosis of the trunk and limbs except the face is not the usual early or prominent pattern, and cyanosis limited to palms and soles overlooks the mucous membranes and other visible sites like the lips and nails that clinicians watch closely.
